LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - The Giants defeated Kansas City 3-2 in Game 7, and with that victory they've become the first team since the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates to win a World Series Game 7 on the road.
Help provide kids with the quality learning tools they need.
They also become the second team, after the Boston Red Sox, to win three World Series championships in the 21st century.
"I'm numb through all this," said Manager Bruce Bochy. "You're so blessed or fortunate to get in the World Series and get to one; it just doesn't happen very often. I'm amazed at what these guys did."
Bochy has been the manager of the Giants through their last three championships.
Madison Bumgarner, the 25-year-old left-hander, wrote his name in the history books with this series. He won two games, including a shutout in Game 5. On October 29 he earned the save and pitched five scoreless innings in relief. He allowed two hits and struck out four to be named the most valuable player of the World Series.
"Bumgarner's a great starting pitcher," said Royals Manager Ned Yost just prior to the game. "We'll see what kind of a reliever he is."
The bottom of the ninth showed just what kind of pitcher he is. He started by setting down two batters, giving up a single to Alex Gordon.
"I was starting to get a little nervous," Bumgarner said. "He can run a little bit, and that's a big outfield. I just wanted someone to get it and get it in, which they did in plenty of time. But it was a little bit nerve-racking."
Bumgarner went back to work, using fastballs to take advantage of the aggressiveness of Salvador Perez.
He eventually got Perez to hit a pop-up into foul territory, where the Giant's third baseman, Sandoval, caught it for the final out.
"I knew what was on the line, and I'm a huge fan of baseball," said Buster Posey, the Giant's catcher. "I think it's a dynasty. Today, with parity around the game, three out of five is special."
